Fall Crawl - New Kent and Charles City
St. Peter’s Parish Church, New Kent - Built 1701-1703. Tower added 1739-40 by undertaker William Walker. Rectangular church laid in English bond. Original curvilinear “Flemish” gables have been restored. Large east-end window. Similar in design to St. Luke’s (1680) and earlier Bruton Parish (1681-83) and Jamestown churches.
Berkeley Plantation, Charles City - Finished 1726 by Benjamin Harrison IV and Anne Carter Harrison, Robert Carter’s daughter. Date stone with their initials appears over a side door. Pedimented gables and rubbed brickwork. Birthplace of Benjamin Harrison V (signer of the Declaration of Independence) and his son William Henry Harrison, 9th President of the United States. “Taps” composed and played here for the first time during McClellan’s occupation in 1862. Site of First Thanksgiving (1619).
Shirley Plantation, Charles City - Completed 1738. Home of Robert Carter’s son Secretary John Carter. Original collection of outbuildings includes L-shaped barns, kitchen, schoolhouse, stable, dovecote and smokehouse. Carter family portraits, silver, furniture and books on display. Plantation settled in 1613.
